Bee School

Beekeeping Basics for Beginners

Sign up for Bee School 2025 is open!

Caught bee fever but don’t know where to start? Join us for a crash course in beginning beekeeping!

The indoor classroom presentations will cover the basics, from honey bee biology, beekeeping equipment, pests and diseases that affect honey bees, getting started with your own hives, and more. Our speakers have decades of combined experience in beekeeping!

Participants will receive additional hands-on instruction through a series of outdoor sessions at the 5CBA apiary, scheduled throughout the 2025 season. You’ll learn how to light a smoker, important safety precautions, and check out different types of hives. It’s an opportunity to figure out what kind of hive you want, work live bees, and receive practical beekeeping advice from experienced beekeepers.

The class fee covers:

  • One day of indoor classroom instruction
  • Multiple sessions of outdoor instruction- Feb 22, and other days TBD, weather permitting
  • Lunch and snacks provided on Feb 15
  • Copy of The Beekeeper’s Handbook by Diana Sammataro and Alphonse Avitabile will be sent as soon as you sign up
  • Chance to win HONEY BEES or bee equipment
